Actions for ‘Discussion #4: Youth Scrutinize the Hidden Curriculum, Why Don’t Adults?’ The purpose of this activity is to: Explain the hidden curriculum in the education system. Identify examples of manifest and latent functions of education. Apply the sociological theoretical paradigms to education. Assess potential effects that the hidden curriculum can have on the lives of children and later on as adults. Instructions: 1. Watch the spoken word performance entitled “Somewhere in America” from the Brave New Voices youth speakers (click here to watch). The video shows three high school students performing a poem about the education system in America. 2. After watching the video and drawing from what you know of the Canadian education system from your textbook, reflect on the following questions: · What is meant by the hidden curriculum in the education system? · What are some of the manifest and latent functions of education the teenagers point out in their poem? · Choose 1 of the 3 theoretical paradigms (structural functionalism OR social conflict OR symbolic interaction) and discuss how the approach explains the hidden curriculum using examples from the video. · What are some of the potential effects that the hidden curriculum can have on children and later on in their adult lives?
